Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you charge a membership fee?
The membership fee allows us to provide the vast majority of a person’s primary care in an innovative way for a simple, fixed price. It allows members to better anticipate and budget their healthcare finances without the extra costs, co-pays, and deductibles.
Do you take health insurance?
We do NOT accept insurance for the medical services you receive through your membership. However, you may use your insurance for services you receive outside of True North DPC, such as imaging/specialists/surgery/hospitalizations, etc.
Perhaps the most distinctive aspect of our model of care centers on a direct relationship between you and your doctor. Better care can be delivered more effectively and affordably by separating primary care from the regulations of insurance that restricts other traditional practices. We see no reason for any insurer to have a voice about either the quality or the cost of your family’s care, so we are eliminating the middleman (insurance). This allows us to contract directly with vendors for wholesale prices on labs, imaging and medication and pass those savings on to you.
What if I'm healthy and rarely go to the doctor?
We’re here to support everyone – those at the peak of health, those managing multiple chronic conditions, and anyone in between. Our approach is all about meeting you where you are, and crafting a care plan to fit your unique needs and desires. We believe that everyone can benefit from the comprehensive services and time we dedicate to our patients; and our memberships aren’t determined by pre-existing conditions or your current health level.
If you’re in great health, our main focus is on maintaining your well-being and maximizing your health using a mix of lifestyle, integrative and functional medicine approaches. We’re also here to help on those occasional sick days or when unexpected events happen, aiming to prevent missed work/school and costly visits to the emergency room.
If I join True North DPC, do I still need health insurance?
We recommend that you have some form of ‘wrap-around coverage’ like a high deductible insurance plan to cover you and your family for catastrophic events. Medical cost-sharing plans or Health Shares are also good options to consider with plans built specifically for DPC. Feel free to contact our office if you’d like our help with coverage navigation.
We can take care of 80-90% of your healthcare needs, and we deliver an excellent service but it is always smart to have a plan in place to cover the remainder of your care needs.
Can I use my HSA and/or FSA to pay for my membership?
True North DPC accepts HSA and FSA funds as a form of payment, however, it is the responsibility of the patient to ensure eligibility of use in accordance with IRS guidelines.
Can I become a member if I'm on Medicare?
While we would love to welcome you aboard immediately, Medicare has strict legal regulations stating that a physician (who is automatically “opted-in” to Medicare) MUST bill Medicare for any Medicare covered services (i.e. physicals, office visits, labs, etc). It is therefore illegal for a doctor who has not “opted-out” to charge a monthly membership fee to a patient who has Medicare insurance.
Dr. Slings will be “moonlighting” at local urgent cares until her practice grows enough that she can devote herself full-time to True North. At this point she will opt-out of Medicare which will allow her to accept members with Medicare insurance. Upon enrollment you will be asked to sign our Medicare Opt-out Agreement (ABN) stating that you will not bill Medicare for any of our services.
If you are on Medicare and are interested in becoming a member please subscribe to our Medicare patient waiting list. We will keep you updated as to when Dr. Slings is able to onboard you to the Practice.
